arumai (p. 26) s. Rareness, scarceness, scantiness, அபூர்வம். 2. Preciousness, desirableness, pre-eminence. மேன்மை. 3. Difficulty, laboriousness, வருத்தம். 4. Impossibility, unattainableness, கூடாமை. 5. Delicacy, சிறப்பு.--Note. As an adjective, மை is dropped before a consonant with a change of that, when required in combination, and அரு may be changed into அரிய with or without து, or the last vowel may be dropped, and the first lengthened as in ஆருயிர், precious life. அருங்கலைநாயகன், s. Buddha, the lord of eminent sciences, புத்தன். அருங்கலைவினோதன், s. one devoted to learning; one whose time is spent in cultivating the arts and sciences. அருங்கிடை, s. Extreme hunger from long abstinence, &c., பட்டிணி. அருங்கிடைகிடக்க, inf. To be in a starving condition. அருங்கேடன், s. One who is imperishable, who will always prosper. (குறள்.) 2. (c.) Difficult standing said of a ford when impassable. அருநிழல், s. A slight shade. அருநெறி, s. A narrow or difficult way. 2. Gate-way or entrance. அருந்தமிழ், s. Elegant Tamil. அருந்தவம், s. Rigid austerities. அருந்தவர், s. Ascetics. அருந்தூதன், s. A tormentor, one who inflicts pain, வேதனைசெய்வோன். அருமருந்து, s. Nectar, அமிர்தம். In classical works, this in the form அருமருந்தன்னபிள்ளை is contracted to அருமந்த, precious as nectar, as, அருமந்தபிள்ளை. A very dear child, அருமந்ததேர். A very costly chariot. அருமறை, s. The sacred Vedas. Ell. 145. 4. அருமறைக்கொடியோன், s. A name of Dronácharya, the military preceptor of the Pandavas and Kurus, because of the Vedic device on his banner. அருமைப்படுத்த, inf. To make scarce, hard, difficult. 2. To impart reluctantly, make much of. அரும்பண்டம், s. A rare article, choice wares, valuable commodity. அரும்பிணி, s. An incurable disease. (நாலடி.) Ell. 118. அரும்பூட்டு, s. [prov.] A girdle, waist-string, necklace, &c., so short as scarcely to be brought to meet, a string, rope, &c., so short as to be tied with difficulty, a bow-string so short as to be liable to break if brought up too far, any thing too little, too short, too narrow, &c., எட்டாப்பூட்டு. 2. Difficulty in settling a negotiation, agreement, &c., இணக்கக்கூடாமை. 3. Entanglement, ensnarement, மோசத்திலகப்படுகை. 4. Forced connection in language, clauses disconnected or not joined naturally, difficult or unnatural; construction, தொடர்ச்சி யின்மை. சொற்களையரும்பூட்டாய்த் தொடுத்துப்பேசினான். He spoke in an unconnected manner. அரும்பொருள், s. Excellent advice, hard doctrine, a rare or difficult meaning. 2. A choice or precious article. அருவினை, s. A great sin. அருவினைகளைந்து. ācciramam (p. 37) s. Hermitage, the residence of an ascetic, முனிவரிருப்பிடம். 2. Religious condition as prescribed especially for the Brahmans, including four degrees or orders, நிலை; viz.: 1. பிரமசாரி யாச்சிரமம், the state or condition of a bachelor, who, from the time of his investment with the sacred cord, is required to tend the sacred fires and to follow his studies under or in the presence of his preceptor. 2. கிரகஸ்தாச்சிரமம், the state of a house-holder, who, from his marriage, must strictly observe his religious duties, maintain the sacred fires, and liberally practise hospitality for the support of the other three orders. 3. வானப்பிரஸ்தாச் சிரமம், the state of an anchorite or recluse, who, with or without his wife, relinquishes domestic life, retires to the desert feeding on leaves, roots and fruits, or on the hospitality of the second order, and continues to perform his daily rites. 4. சன்னியாசியாச்சிரமம், the state of a religious mendicant who performs no rite whatever and lives only on alms, sometimes appearing in a state of nudity. aiyṉ (p. 80) s. [voc. ஐயா, ஐய, ஐயனே, &c., pl. ஐயன்மார், ஐயமார்.] Father, பிதா. 2. Elder brother, மூத்தோன். 3. Guru, குரு. 4. An elder, a superior, a person of dignity, respectability, master, &c., உயர்ந்தோன். 5. A king, அரசன். 6. A teacher, preceptor, உபாத்தியாயன். 7. The god Eyanar, ஐயனார். 8. Argha, அருகன். (p.) ஐயர் is sometimes used in the nominative case for ஐயன்--as ஐயர்வந்தபின்புனக்குத்தருவேன். I will give it to you after my father, master, &c., is come. ஐயா. The vocative of ஐயன் is often used as an interjection. ஐயாபணமிரந்தாலுங்கொள்ளக்கிடையாதே... Strange indeed, though one has money, the thing is not to be bought. வாருமையா. Come, sir--a common term of salutation among persons of respectability. அரிவையைக்கோடியையா. Take a wife, sir, I beseech you--addressed by a father to his son. (ஸ்காந்.) அறைந்தாயைய. You say, sir. To give permission, to grant privileges, warrant. கட்டளைக்கல், s. A touchstone, உரைகல். 2. Weight, நிறைகல். கட்டளைக்குரு--கட்டளைச்சுவாமி, s. The principal priest for the time being--so used by the Romanists. கட்டளைசொல்ல, inf. To give or publish an order, to publish a notice. கட்டளைச்சட்டம், s. Regulations, enactments, edicts, statutes. கட்டளைத்தம்பிரான், s. One of a religious order who acts as an overseer or burser in a temple, or charitable institution, receiving the rents and dues, making disbursements and seeing that the services are properly conducted. வாரக்கட்டளைத்தம்பிரான், s. An overseer of a religious order who is gratuitously fed by the community, receiving food from the same family every seventh day. கட்டளைபண்ண, inf. To command, direct, order. கட்டளைபிடித்துவார, inf. [prov.] To cut ola by a rule. கட்டளைப்படிவர, inf. To come regularly. 2. To come according to order. கட்டளைமீற, inf. To break or violate an order. கட்டளையிட, inf. To order, command, direct, decree, prescribe, charge. 2. To grant, bestow. 3. To pass a law or edict, to utter a decision. நமக்கீசனிட்டகட்டளையிதுதான். This is just what God has allowed us. வாரக்கட்டளைமடம், s. An hotel where boiled rice is distributed weekly. 27)

To betray mean descent, low caste, &c., by mean behavior. குணங்குறி, s. Disposition, features, characteristics, குணமுங்குறியும். குணங்குறியறிய, inf. To know one's disposition and character. குணங்குறியுள்ளவன், s. A man of good disposition, and other good characteristics. குணசந்தி, s. [in gram.] A form of combining words of Sanscrit origin-as சுர and இந்திரன், make சுரேந்திரன், வடமொ ழிச்சத்தியிலொன்று. குணசாலி, s. A good-natured man or woman; one of an excellent disposition. குணசீலன், s. One abounding in excellent qualities. குணசுபாவம்--குணப்பிரகிருதி, s. Natural disposition. குணஷ்டை, s. [in Christian usage.] One who has repented; a convert. குணப்பண்பு, s. [in gram.] Sensible qualities of objects--as bitterness, whiteness--as distinguished from குறிப்புப்பண்பு, ideal quality, and தொழிற்பண்பு, acting quality. See பண்பு. குணப்பிழை, s. Good and bad, virtues and vices, beauties and defects, commendation and censure, &c. குணமுடையவன்--குணமுள்ளவன், s. A kind-hearted, good-natured, generous man. 2. A well-bred man. குணமுற்றவன், s. A good-natured man. குணமுற்றவன் மணமுற்றவன்; குணமற்றவன் மண மற்றவன். A good-natured man will be praised; but an ill-natured man, despised. குணரத்தினாகரன், s. One whose benevolence is like the sea; [ex இரத்தினாகரம்.] குணவதி, s. A very good natured person. Wils. p. 292. GUN'AVATI. குணவந்தன்--குணவான், s. A well-disposed person; one of a good disposition. குணவவநுதி, s. [in rhet.] A kind of அவநூதி figure, in which a prorperty or quality universally predicated of an object is apparently denied, by affirming the opposite, either ironically or ambiguously. குணவாகடம்--குணபாடல், s. A treatise on the signs and symptoms of diseases, ஓர்வைத்தியநூல். குணவாகுபெயர், s. [in gram.] Names of qualities or attributes, used by metonymy for objects possessing those qualities or attributes--as in நீலஞ்சூடினாள். குணவாக்கு, s. Peculiar temper or habit. குணவிலக்கு, s. [in rhet.] Negation of a property or quality in a person or thing from the presence of its opposite, ஓரலங்காரம். குணவுவமம்--குணவுவமை, s. [in rhet.] A species of simile; similitude, of qualities and properties. See பண்புவமை. குணன், s. A man of good qualities, generally found in compounds--as in அறுகுணன், சற்குணன். குணாதீதம், s. A good disposition, kindness, benevolence, virtue. சற்குணன்--சற்குணி, s. A virtuous person; a good-natured person. சாத்தியகுணம், s. [in medi.] The condition or state of being curable; favorable symptoms; hopeful case. குணி, s. One endowed with good qualities, a good-tempered person, நற்குண முடையான். 2. [in gram.] A subject, any thing which possesses attributes or qualities--as distinguished from குணம், also, the names of such things, பண்பி. 3. [ex குணம், bow-string.] A bow, வில். (சது.) குணிப்பெயர், s. [in gram.] Concrete or subjective noun; a denotative name which signifies a subject only and not an attribute or quality--as மதுரை, தாம ரை--opposed to குணப்பெயர். துர்க்குணம்--தீக்குணம், s. Bad disposition, ill-nature, vice. நாய்க்குணம், s. Doggedness, rudeness, cynicalness. பேய்க்குணம், s. Devilishness, foolishness. மழைக்குணம், s. Sign or appearance of rain. நாற்குணம், s. The four prevalent or prominent human qualities. These are subdivided, and four are ascribed to each sex. 1. ஆடூஉக்குணம், the masculine: 1. அறிவு, knowledge, intelligence, clear perception. 2. நிறை, equanimity, self-control. 3. ஓர்ப்பு, fortitude, firmness, deci sion. 4. கடைப்பிடி, confidence, full persuasion, perseverance. II. மகடூஉக்குணம், the feminine: 1. நாணம், shyness, coyness, bashfulness--with regard to the other sex. 2. மடம், simplicity, weakness of intellect, want of clear perception. 3. அச்சம், timidity, fear, diffidence. 4. பயிர் ப்பு, delicacy; modesty; shrinking from what is mean or vile. முக்குணம், s. The three principles in nature, Satva, Raja, and Tama, which are the ultimate source of all quality or character in man, and may be indefinitely developed and expanded. The more generic and prominent development is three-fold, making nine gunas. Satva-guna-- goodness, produces illumination and mildness in thought, word and deed. Operating in these directions, it becomes an 'unfailling and perfect light to the soul, arousing it and making it ready to eat the fruit of its own doings' Raja-guna--passion, produces for the soul the propensity to excessive occupation in thought, word and deed, and asperity in the same. By these means it prepares the soul to receive pleasure and pain, according to its karmma or the law of its fate. Tama-guna brings forth arrogance, that egotistic guna which says 'there is none like me,' &c., and wilfulness or depraved will. By these means it welcomes all sensual objects and brings them to the soul. The first stage in the soul's spiritual progress is a degree of self-knowledge by which it has a view of these gunas and its relations to them. To each of these gunas belong certain peculiar qualifications. I. சத்துவகுணம் or சாத்துவிகம். Ist. ஞானம், wisdom. 2d. அருள், grace. 3d. தவம், penance. 4th. பொறை, patience. 5th. வாய் மை, veracity. 6th. மேன்மை, greatness, excellence. 7th. மௌனம், silence, taciturnity. 8th. ஐம்பொறியடக்கல், restraint of the five senses. The Satva principle is the source of truth, and the predominance of it renders its possessor virtuous, gentle, devout, charitable, chaste, honest, &c. II. இரசகுணம் or இராசதம். 1st. மனவூக்கம், mental exertion. 2d. ஞானம், discretion. 3d. வீரம், fortitude. 4th. தவம், penance. 5th. தருமம், charity. 6th. தா னம், liberality. 7th. கல்வி, erudition. 8th. கேள்வி, inquiry, instruction. The Raja principle is the source of sensual desire, worldly covetousness, pride and falsehood, and is the cause of pain. III. தமகுணம் or தாமதம். 1st. பேருண்டி, rioting or banqueting. 2d. நெடுந்துயில், long sleep. 3d. சோம்பு sluggishness. 4th. நீதிவழு, deviation from justice. 5th. ஒழுக் கவழு, deviation from virtue. 6th. வஞ்சம். deceit. 7th. மறதி, forgetfulness. 8th. பொய், lying, falsehood. 9th. கோபம், anger. 1th. காமம், lust, lasciviousness. 11th. கொலை, murder. The Tama principle is the source of folly, ignorance, mental blindness, worldly delusion, &c.--Note. These three gunas, according to the Agama school, are developed from Prakruti (மூலப்பிரகிருதி,) and constitute all those physical and psychical aspects, which, under the determining power of the will, form the functional qualities of an organized soul. (சிவ-சி.) In the Vedantic, idealist philosophy the gunas are the ideal attributes of Mula-Prakruti which, in its turn, is but an illusion or mistaken representation of Brahm. அறுகுணம்--இச்சுரன்முக்கியகுணம், s. The principal attributes of Isvara or God are six in number. 1. சர்வஞ்ஞத்துவம், omniscience. 2. சர்வேசுரத்துவம், supremacy. 3. சர்வநியந்திருத்துவம், pre-ordination. 4. சர் வாந்தரியாமித்துவம், omnipresence. 5. சர்வகற் பிதத்துவம், unlimited creative power. 6. சர்வ சத்தித்துவம், almightiness. (சது.) Another enumeration is-- 1. தன்வயத்தனாதல், selfexistence. 2. முதலிலனாதல், eternity. 3. உடம்பிலனாதல், immateriality. 4. எல்லாநல முளனாதல், benevolence. 5. எங்கும்வியாபகனா தல், omnipresence. 6. எவற்றிற்குங்காரணனா தல், being the Creator of all things.-Note. The latter enumeration is found in Roman Catholic writings. எண்குணம், s. The eight attributes of the deity. Authors differ in their enumerations and definitions of them. The enumeration of பரிமேலழகர், the commentator of the Cural, as agreeing with the Agamas, is:--1. தன்வயத்தனாதல், self-existence, independence. 2. தூயவுடம்பினனாதல், immaculateness. 3. இயற்கையுணர்வினனாதல், intuitive wisdom. 4. முற்றுமுணர்தல், omniscience. 5. இயல்பாகவே பாசங்களினீங்கிநிற் றல், freedom from the snares and illusions to which a derived intelligence is exposed. 6. பொருளுடைமை, unbounded kindness. 7. முடிவிலாற்றலுடைமை, omnipotence. 8. வரம்பிலின்பமுடைமை, infinite happiness. Another enumeration, as given in Jaina books, is--1. கடையிலாஞானம், infinite wisdom. 2. கடையிலாக்காட்சி, omniscience. 3. கடையிலாவீரியம், omnipotence. 4. கடையிலாவின்பம், boundless happiness. 5. நாமமின்மை, being nameless. 6. கோத்தி ரமின்மை, without descent. 7. ஆயுவின்மை, without age; eternal. 8. அந்தாரயமின்மை, unobstructed. 13)

kurvr (p. 125) s. (sing. mas. குரவன். fem. குரத்தி.) Elders; persons qualified by age family connexion, respectability, knowledge or authority to give advice and exercise control--as parents, kings, statesmen, senators, &c., பெரியோர். 2. Gurus; religious preceptors, ministers or teachers, குருக்கள். ஐங்குரவர், s. The five superiors to be venerated and obeyed. See under ஐந்து. 14)

kuru (p. 125) s. A guru, a spiritual teacher, a priest, ஆசான்.--Note. According to the shastras, the guru is to be regarded by the disciple as the personification of the deity; and to be worshipped with divine honors. In his presence, the disciple is exonerated from his accustomed rites, and devotions, and addresses him by appellatives, used in addressing the deity of his sect. 2. the planet Jupiter, regarded as the guru or priest of Swerga, &c., வியாழன். 3. Heaviness, weight, பாரம். 4. Consequence, importance, moment, காத்திரம். 5. Greatness, eminence, excellence, exaltedness, பெருமை. 6. [in music.] The quantity of a long vowel, or a long note. இருமாத்திரை. 7. [in gram.] A long vowel, நெடில். 8. [in the Agamas.] The deity Siva--as illuminator of souls, சி வன். 9. Divinity, திவ்வியம். Wils. p. 293. GURU. 1. A kind of native arsenic,, பலண் டுறுகம். 11. [in medi. &c.] Blue vitriol, துருசி. 12. [in alchy.] A compound medicine, formed of different metals; phylosopher's powder, உலோகங்களை வேதிக்குங்சிந்தூரமுதலியவை. 13. [in chem.] Mercury, இரதம்.--Note. In the last three senses, the word Guru has its technical meanings, derived however from its literal meaning of precepter and director. 14. Brilliancy, lustre, effulgence, பிரகா சம். Wils. p. 31. GHRU. 15. The name of one of the nine sons of அங்கீதிரன், who was the first monarch of Jambu Dwipa, அங்கீதிரன்புதல்வரில் ஒருவன். (காந்.) 16. One of the nine division or var'shas of Jambu Dwipa which fell to the share of the prince Kuru, being the most northern portion beyond the Sringa range of mountains, குருவருடம். 17. The name of a prince of the lunar race, famous in the Bharata, from whom the family was called குருகுலம் and the descendants, கௌரவர்; குரு குலவம்சத்து முதல்அரசன். (பார.) 18. A country near Delhi, over which Kuru of the lunar race was once a sovereign, குருபூமி. (பார.) 19. prickly heat, வேர்க்குரு; Wils. p. 232. KURU. 2. Pustule, blister; hence, any eruptive disease--as the small-pox, chicken-pox, measles, &c., குருவியாதி. குருஆரால்மூக்குப்போலிருக்கின்றது. The smallpox is like the nose of a lamprey. குருநாதன், s. The name of Skanda-as having explained to his father Siva the mystic word ஓம். 2. Siva. 3. A guru--as the lord of the disciple. குருபரன்--குருமூர்த்தி, s. The deity in human form, appearing for the instruction of a devoted person of the சக லர், especially spoken of Siva. குருகடாட்சம், s. The gracious or benign look of the guru on his disciple, dispelling sin, imparting spiritual wisdom, and preparing the soul for emancipation. குருகற்பனை, s. Precept or the guru-deemed sacred. குருசந்தானம், s. A regular succession of priests, or gurus. குருசம்பாவனை, s. Blessing or favor of the guru. 2. Worship or honor due to the guru. குருசம்பிரதாயம், s. Oral instruction in the secret meaning of the mantras, &c., handed down from generation to generation, in the line of the guru, and by him communicated confidentially to his advanced disciples. குருசன்னிதானம், s. The presence of the guru. குருசேடம், s. Remains of a guru's food--considered sacred, குருப்பிரசாதம். குருசேவை, s. Civilities, duties, worship, &c., paid to a guru, குருஉபசரணை. குருதக்கணை--குருதட்சிணை, s. Fees or presents to the guru, commonly in money, given with due homage, &c. குருதீட்சை--குருதீக்கை, s. The initiation of a disciple by a guru to certain privileges of his religion, or afterwards to a more advanced degree, குரூபதேசம். குருத்திரவியம், s. Property or treasure of the guru. குருத்துரோகம், s. Treachery towards a guru, or injury of one. குருநிந்தை, s. Indignity to the priest. குருத்துவம், s. Priesthood, or the dignity, power, honor, &c., of a guru, குருத்தன்மை. 2. Honor, respectability, கனம். Wils. p. 293. GURUTVA. குருபத்தி--குருவிசுவாசம், s. Dutiful love, piety, &c., towards the guru, குருவி னிடத்திலன்பு. குருபத்தினி--குருபன்னி, s. The wife of a guru, குருவின்மனைவி. குருபாரம்பரியம், s. Ancestral priesthood in regular succession; the lineage or genealogy of a guru,குருபாரம்பரை. குருபீடம், s. The dignified seat, or office of a guru, குருஸ்தானம். குருபுத்திரன், s. A son of a guru, குரு புதல்வன். 2. An obedient disciple, உண் மையானசீஷன். குருபூசை, s. Pujah or worship, offered to a guru, by an advanced disciple competent to do it, குருவுக்குச்செய்யுமாராதனை. 2. Food, &c., given to Brahmans, religious mendicants, &c., by the disciples of a deceased guru, in rememberence of him as deifled, இறந்துபோனகுருவைக்குறித்துச்செய் யும்பூசை. குருபோதனை, s. The instruction of the guru. குருப்பட்டம், s. The office, authority of dignity of a guru, குருத்துவம். குருப்பட்டம்பெற, inf. To receive priesty authority, ordination, &c. குருப்பட்டாபிஷேகம், s. The ordination of a guru. குருப்பிரசாதம், s. The favor, grace, or blessing of the guru; gift from the guru, குருவருள். 2. Remains of a guru's food, குருவுண்டசேஷம். குருமரியாதை, s. Reverence for the guru. குருமுகமாய்க்கேட்க--குருமுன்னிலை யாயறிய--குருவாக்கியமாய்க்கேட்க inf. To learn viva voce, so as to attain certainty in doubtful matters. குருமுறை, s. A guru's teaching, குரு சொல்லியமுறை. குருமுன்னிலையாய், In the presence of the guru, குருவின்முன்னிடம். 2. By means or favor of the guru, குருமூலம். குருமை, s. Dignity, superiority, பெ ருமை. குருமூர்த்தம், s. The manifestation of a deity as a guru for the instruction of disciples; especially spoken of Siva, குரு வடிவம். குருலிங்கசங்கமம், s. An aggregate of the spiritual guru--Siva under the phallic emblem--and the devotees of Siva, குருவுஞ் சிவமுந் திருக்கூட்டமும். குருமொழி--குருவசனம்--குருவாக்கியம் --குருவாக்கு, s. The precepts, instructions, &c., of a guru. குருவுக்குநாமம்வைக்கிறவன், s. One who out-schemes, and out-wits, his guru, teacher or superior. குருவுபதேசம்--குரூபதேசம்,s. The initiation of a disciple by the guru. சற்குரு, s. A divine guru, the heavenly teacher. குருசந்திரயோகம், s. The conjunction of Jupiter and the moon in the same sign--considered auspicious. குருசாரபலம், s. [in astrol.] Good and ill results, derived from the progress of the planet Jupiter through the signs, வியாழபலன். குருவாரம், s. Thursday, வியாழக்கிழ மை. குருக்கொடுக்க, inf. [prov.] To instigate, ஏவிவிட. 2. To persuade, incite, commonly to a bad action, கொடுமைசெய் யத்தூண்ட. 3. To assume to teach, give advice &c., in the presence of the learned, புத்திசொல்ல. குருக்கொள்ள, inf. To assume to teach, give advice, &c., above one's age. இராசநீதி குருக்கொண்டு முதிர்ந்தனையோ. Do you take upon you to teach jurisprudence? (பார.) குருதுரியம், s. [in the Agamas.] The highest degree in the சுத்தம் state of souls; that next to absorption. குருபதம், s. The bliss of the deity, சதானந்தம். 2. Liberation from births, and absorptiom in the deity, பிறவிநீக்கம். குருமுடிக்க, inf. To combine ingredients with medicines to make them active, or to neutralize poisonous qualities, &c., இரசவாதகுருமுடிக்க. குருகுலம், s. The Kuru dynasty; the patronymic is commonly applied to the sons and descendants of Dhrutarashtra, குருவமிசம். குருகுலத்தரசர்--குருகுலவேந்தர், s. Kings of the Kuru race. குருநிலம், s. The territory of the king Kuru. குருக்கேத்திரம்--குருக்ஷேத்திரம், s. The country near Delhi, the scene of the great battle between the Kurus and Pándavas, described in the Bharata. Wils. p. 242. KURUKSHETRA. குருக்கேத்திரன், s. The name of a king in mythology, ஓர்வீரன். குருவருடம், s. One of the nine portions or divisions of the central continent, or Jambu Dwipa, ஓர்கண்டம்.
