Inference, illation-one of the modes in logic of arriving at a conclusion, as from smoke to infer the presence of fire, காரியத்தாற்காரணமறிகை. Wils. p. 34. ANUMANA. Some reckon the following four kinds; viz.: 1. தன்பொருட் டனுமானம். 2. பிறர்பொருட்டனுமானம். 3. அன் னுவயவனுமானம். 4. வெதிரேகவனுமானம். In அளவை the four are; 1. ஏதுவனுமானம், inference of an existing cause from sight of the effect, as of fire from the appearance of smoke. 2. பொதுவனுமானம், inference of the existence of a thing or reality of a thing by the presence of another, which is not wholly conclusive but probable and consistent. 3. எச்சவனு மானம், inference of a past cause from a present effect--as fishes in the rivers show that torrents have fallen on the mountains. 4. முதலனுமானம், inference of a future effect from a present cause-as that rainy clouds will bring rain. Another. 1. பூர்வக்காட்சி, inference of a thing from previous knowledge of its properties--as when we see a flower, we identify it from its smell. 2. அனுமானவ னுமானம், inference from an inference--as when we infer that a man is learned from his mode of treating a subject. 3. ஆகமவனுமானம், inference from the rules of Agamas--as the punishment is owing to former deeds. 2. Doubt, hesitancy uncertainty, conjecture, சமுசயம். அனுமானப்பிரமாணம், s. one of the eight laws of evidence, inference, காரியத்தாற்காரணத்தைக்காட்டுவது. அனுமானிக்க, inf. ēṟṟu (p. 79) கிறேன், ஏற்றினேன், வேன், ஏற்ற, v. a. To raise, hoist, lift up, எழுப்ப. 2. to load a cart, &c.; to ship; to put upon a shelf, &c., set a load on one's head, set up, pile up, stow, பாரமேற்ற. 3. To put in, cause to enter, insert, drive in--as a nail, உள்ளேற்ற. 4. (p.) To teach, instruct, உ ணர்த்த. மச்சிலேற்றியேணியைவாங்கிவிட்டான். He has put me in the loft, and taken away the ladder; i. e. he has induced me to engage in the business and then deserted me. நிறைந்ததண்ணளியினனென்பாரதனைக்குடைமேலேற் றிமுழுமதிமுக்குடையென்றார். he said, the triple, full-moon-like umbrellas--thus transferring the benignant qualities of the possessor to the umbrella. ஐ. The diphthong ai, the ninth vowel, ஒன்பதாமுயிர். It may be written for அய் or vice versa. In the beginning and middle of a word, when followed by ச, ஞ், or ய, ஐ is sometimes substituted for அ--as அரைசன் for அரசன்; மைஞ்சு for மஞ்சு; ஆலையம் for ஆலயம்; மையல் for மயல். Words beginning with ஐ often take அய் instead--as அய்ய ன் for ஐயன்; அய்யோ for ஐயோ, &c. 2. The form of the second or accusative case, இரண் டனுருபு--as அவனை, him. 3. A termination of the second pers. sing. முன்னிலையொருமைவி குதி--as பெரியை, thou art great; வந்தனை, thou art come. 4. A termination of nouns chiefly feminine, பெயர்விகுதி--as தெரிவை, a woman; தந்தை, a father. 5. An expletive இதையதின்மேலேற்றிச்சொல்லலாம். This is applicable to that. தன்வருத்தத்தைமாலைப்பொழுதின்மேலேற்றி. Ascribing her sufferings to the evening twilight. குற்றத்தையென்மேலேற்றப்பார்தான். He sought to fix the blame on me. ஏற்றிப்போட--ஏற்றிவிட inf. To transport, to export goods. ஏற்றுதுறை, s. Place of exportation or embarkation, துறைமுகம். ஏற்றுமதி, s. Export. 2. oṭṭu (p. 81) கிறேன், ஒட்டினேன், வேன், ஒட்ட, v. a. and v. n. To stick on, to stick up, to glue on, cause to cleave or adhere, பொருத்த. 2. To apply, resort, betake one's self to a person for support, protection, to come or be near, or in contact with, to lean on or join one's self to a thing, சார. 3. To use qualifying terms, phrases, adjuncts, &c., அடைகொடுக்க. 4. To lay a wager, to gamble, பந்தயம்வைக்க. 5. To permit, suffer, allow, let, இடங்கொடுக்க. 6. To increase length or breath by addition, to add to, சேர்க்க. 7. To grow lean, be withered, shrunk, &c., to have the skin stick to the bones, be shrivelled as a fruit, &c., சுருங்க. 8. To stand near a wall, a pillar, &c., in order to over-hear, to way-lay, &c., விசேஷங்கேட்கவொளித்துநிற்க. சுட்டமண்ணும்பச்சைமண்ணுமொட்டாது. Burnt earth will not adhere to that which is fresh. ஒட்டி யுலர்வாருறவு. That is friendship which adheres to and suffers with one, lit. which dries with one as the flowers in the tank. இதுனக்கொட்டுமோ. Will this unjust gain, &c., abide with you? உலகத்தோடொட்டவொழுகல். Acting conformably to the world. (குறள்.) மரத்தோடொட்ட. To hide one's self behind a tree. தோலெல்லாமெலும்போடொட்டிப்போயிற்று..... The skin cleaves to the bones. ஒருவனையொட்டிப்பிழைக்க. To subsist by means of another. அவனைவரவொட்டும். [Contracted in colloquial use to அவன்வரட்டும்.] Let him come. சொல்லவொட்டான். He will not permit me to speak. ஒட்டஅறுக்க, inf. To cut off short or level with the ground--as corn; to cut off altogether, to sever--as an ear, a tail, &c. ஒட்டஇணைகக, inf. To nail in close. ஒட்டக்கட்ட, inf. To tie short. 2. To tuck or gather up the clothes well so that no part may hang down. 3. To tie a necklace close to the neck. ஒட்டப்பட்டினிபோட--ஒட்டப் போட, inf. To make a patient fast in order to cure his disease, or to put on short commons a disobedient person for disciplinary purposes. ஒட்டவடிக்க, inf. To drain quite off. ஒட்டவிட, inf. To let one join or have access to one. 2. To set cocks together preparatory for fighting. ஒட்டாக்கொற்றி, s. A cow cruel to its calf. 2. A woman unkind to her child or inattentive, unyielding, &c., to her husband. ஒட்டாமலடிக்க, inf. To neglect one who has sought protection. ஒட்டார்--ஒட்டலர், s. Foes, persons that will not unite, பகைவர். (p.) ஒட்டிக்கொள்ள, inf. To cleave, to adhere, &c. 2. A contagious eruption. ஒட்டியமேளம், s. A kind of drum. ஒட்டுவியாதி, s. An infectious disease, தொத்துவியாதி. ஒட்டுறவு, s. Near relationship, great friendship. அறுந்தகாதொட்ட, inf. kiṇṟu (p. 109) s. A well, கூவல். 2. A tank, கேணி. (p.) கிணறுகட்ட, inf. To wall a well. 2. To curb a well. கிணறுவெட்ட, inf. To dig or sink a well. கிணறுவெட்டப் பூதம்புறப்பட்டாற்போல். As a goblin appeared at the digging of the well; i.e. as an unexpected evil resulted where good was sought. கிணறெடுக்க, inf. To select astrologically a spot for a well, in reference to the situation of the house, and other surrounding objects; also to the nature of the soil, the depth at which water may be found, &c. கிணற்றங்கரை, s. Brink or border of a well; the bordering vicinity of a well. கிணற்றுக்கட்டு, s. The walling of a well; the curb of a well. கிணற்றுக்கல், s. Well-bricks or stones. கிணற்றுப்பொங்கல், v. noun. Boiling rice to Bhairava of the lower region, on the appearance of water in digging wells. கிணற்றுமிதி, s. The stand for the waterdrawer. கிணற்றோரம், s. Margin of a well. கற்கிணறு, s. [with dative.] To be at fault, to fail, as the hand playing on an instrument, writing, performing an operation, &c., or the tongue in reading or speaking, &c., தவற. 31. To hobble as a verse, தலைகாட்ட.--Note. The meanings are often cant. அனேகரைக்காய்ச்சல்தட்டிப்போட்டது. The fever has prostrated many persons. தண்ணீர்தலைதட்டநிற்கிறது. The water is head deep. [prov.] தலையைத்தட்டிப்போட்டது. It has carried off his head. தேடியபொருள்காலிலேதட்டினதுபோல. As if the thing sought for, had struck against the foot; i. e. getting accidentally the thing desired. நெஞ்சிலேதட்டிப்பார். Knock at your own breast, and inquire. பல்லைத்தட்டிவிடு. Knock out his teeth. மரங்கள் தெருத்தட்டநிற்கின்றன. The trees extend the whole length of the street. [prov.] தொண்டைக்குள்ளேஏதோதட்டுகிறது. There is something in my throat obstructing the passage. அவன்என்வார்த்தையைத்தட்டிப்போட்டான். He has disobeyed me. மழைதட்டிப்போயிற்று. Rain is deficient. அரிசித்தட்டிப்போயிற்று. The rice is nearly exhausted; or rice is very dear and scarce. தட்டாமல்முட்டாமல் விழுங்கிப்போட்டான். He has swallowed it (his large income) without difficulty. [prov.] தட்டாமல்வைக்க, inf. To place things so as not to touch each other. தட்டவைக்கப்பார்க்க--தட்டவைக்கநி னைக்க, inf. To put one on a wrong scent when in pursuit of another. தட்டிக்கிளம்ப--தட்டியெழும்ப, inf. To rice grow high, or tall. 2. To rise to affluence, influence, &c. 3. To be animated with joy, or zeal for an enterprize; to be roused with anger. தட்டிக்கேட்க, inf. To speak or remonstrate. தட்டிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To quiet, to lull by tapping. 2. To cheer, to encourage men or beasts by patting on the back, shoulders, &c. 3. [in prison bars.] To tap a person so that another may grasp him. தட்டிக்கொள்ள, inf. To be exhausted, to be in want. 2. To strike against, to be resisted, by an obstacle. 3. [prov.] To speak, or repeat a lesson with hesitation; to stammer. தட்டிப்பறிக்க, inf. To strike and snatch away. 2. To get by stratagem. தட்டிப்பறைசாற்ற, inf. To publish by beat of drum. 2. To blab out private matters, to asperse one's character. தட்டிப்பார்க்க, inf. To try to fish out secrets from one. 2. To sit one's erudition, caste, property, &c. 3. To try silver coins, by ringing, and snapping them with the fingers. தட்டிப்பேச, inf. To oppose, to remonstrate, to object, to protest against. தட்டிப்போட, inf. taṟ (p. 230) [prop. தத்.] A Sanscrit prefix in Tamil, the த் being changed to ற் before க், ச், ப். தற்காலம், s. The exact precise time of an action or occurrence, the expected time, the given time being, நிகழ்காலம். 3. Coincidence in time, அக்காலம். 4. [astron.] A given time for which calculation is made.--Note. This word is often used synonymously with தற்காலசுத்தபுடம், which see. தற்காலகிரகநிலை, s. Planetary positions at a given time. 2. The horoscope at the moment of birth. (A term used in nativities.) தற்காலசுத்தபுடம், s. The true longitude or position of a planet at a fixed time. தற்காலமத்திமம், s. The mean longitude at a given time. தற்காலவிலை, s. The price at the time. தற்காலவிலைப்படிதருவேன். I will give as the price may be at the time. தற்காலிக்க, inf. [in astron.] To determine longitude, &c., for a given time, to make a reduction in the elements of calculation of the time given or sought. தற்சணம்--தச்சணம்--தட்சணம்--த க்ஷணம், s. The very moment, not a moment intervening, உடனே. 2. The present moment, அந்தக்ஷணம். தற்சம்ம, s. Words from the Sanscrit used in Tamil, or any of the other cognate languages, without change--as கமலம், the letters of which are the same in Sanscrit and Tamil, but சக்தி in Tamil, is சக்தி in Sanscrit. (சது.) தற்சமயம், s. The particular juncture, the exact moment required, அச்சமயம். 2. The best opportunity, a special season or juncture, உற்றசமயம். தற்பதம், s. Deity, கடவுள். (சது.) தற்பரம்--தற்பரன், s. Absolute deity independent of agencies, assumed energies or operations; i. e. deity quiescent or the male principle in the deity, கடவுள். 2. Siva, சிவன். தற்பரை, s. The Sakti, or female principle of deity, சத்தி. 2. [in astron.] The thirtieth part of the twinkling of an eye, ஒருமாத்திரையில்முப்பதிலொன்று. தற்பவம், s. Words of Sanscrit origin which have undergone a change in their derivatives, வடமொழியிற்றிரிந்தசொல். 16)

tikku (p. 237) s. (Sa. Dik.) Region, quarter, point of the compass, direction, திசை. 2. Protection, shelter, aid, ஆதரவு. (c.) எனக்குத்திக்குமில்லைத்திசையுமில்லை. I have no support whatever. திக்குத்திசைதெரியாதஇருட்டு. Darkness so great that one knows not the points of compass or which way to go. திக்குநோக்கித்தெண்டனிடல். Making obeisance toward the place where a person is-a term of respect or reverence used in epistolary writings. திக்கெல்லாம்வெடிபடப்பேசுகிறான். He speaks loud enough to disturb all the points of compass. அஷ்டதிக்கு, s. The eight points of the compass are: 1. கிழக்கு, East. 2. தென் கிழக்கு, South-east. 3. தெற்கு, South. 4. தென்மேற்கு. South-west. 5. மேற்கு, West 6. வடமேற்கு, North-west. 7. வடக்கு, North. 8. வடகிழக்கு, North-east. Some add two others விசும்பு, the heavens or etherial regions, and பாதாளம், the abyss. தசதிக்கு--தசதிசை, s. The ten points for astrological purposes especially in choosing spots for building houses, &c., are named after certain animals. 1. கிழக்கு. கருடதிசை. 2. தென்கிழக்கு. பூனை த்திசை. 3. தெற்கு. சிங்கத்திசை. 4. தென்மேற்கு. கனகதிசை. 5. மேற்கு. நாகதிசை. 6. வடமே ற்கு, எலித்திசை. 7. வடக்கு. யானைத்திசை. 8. வடகிழக்கு. முயற்றிசை. 9. விசும்புத்திசை. 1. பாதாளத்திசை, which see.--Note The animals of the opposite points are natural foes to each other, the one being pursuer, and the other, the pursued. திக்கடைப்பு--திக்கெல்லை, s. [prov.] Boundaries of land, as mentioned in title deeds. திக்கற்றவன், appel. n. A forlorn, destitute, forsaken person. திக்காக, inf. [adverbiality.] In the direction of, toward. கிழக்குத்திக்காகப்போ. Go directly east. திக்காதிக்கு--திக்காலுக்கு, [prov.] In various directions, here and there, பலதிசையிலும். திக்காலுக்கொருத்தராய்ப்போய்விட்டார்கள். They are gone, are scattered in various directions. திக்கியானை, s. The elephants of the eight cardinal points, male and female supporters of the earth are:-1. East Male ஐராவதம். Female அப்பிரமை. 2. North. ,, சாருவபூமம். ,, அஞ்சனை. 8. N. E. ,, சுப்பிரதீபம். ,, அஞ்சனாவதி. திக்குக்கட்ட--திசைகட்ட, inf. To bind or fortify the cardinal points by turning to each point, repeating the incantation, as இந்திராயநம, and prostrating in worship, to the regent whose protection is sought; then turning to the next point. திக்குக்கட்டு--திக்குப்பந்தனம், v. noun. Fortifying one's self on all sides by incantations, invoking the protection of the regents of the cardinal points. திக்குநோக்க, inf. To look in any direction, as expecting a friend, &c. 2. To direct one's course to any point. திக்குப்பாலகர்--திசாபாலகர், s. The regents of the eight cardinal points, as protectors of the earth, situated beyond the seventh circumambient sea, and invoked in the daily worship, &c. 1. இந்திரன், Indra, regent of the south-east, whose sign is இடி, the thunderbolt. 2. அக்கினி, Agni, regent of the south, east whose sign is புகை, smoke. 3. இயமன், Yama, regent of the south, whose sign is சிங்கம், lion. 4. நிருதி, Niruti, regent of the south-west, whose sign is நாய், a dog. 5. வருணன், Varuna, god of the waters, regent of the west, whose sign is இடபம், a bull. 6. வாயு, Vayu, god of the wind, regent of the north-west. whose sign is கழுதை, an ass. 7. குபேரன், Kuvera, god of riches, regent of the north, whose sign is யானை, an elephant. 8. ஈசானன், Isanan, regent of the northeast, whose sign காகம், a crow. திக்குப்பலி--திக்குப்பூசை, s. Performing puja. around a temple, toward the eight points, to obtain the protection of their regents. திக்குப்பல்லி, s. The chirping of a lizard, as indicating good or ill, according to the direction on which it is heard. திக்குமாறாட்டம், v. noun. Confusion concerning the points of compass, as திசைமயக்கு. திக்குவிசயம், s. Conquering all regions. திக்குவிசயம்பண்ண, inf. To conquer hostile powers. திக்குளார், s. Owners of boundary lands. 27)

tēṭu (p. 258) கிறேன், தேடினேன், வேன், தேட, v. a. To seek, serch for, inquire, after, நாட. 2. To acquire, earn, procure, சம்பாதிக்க. 3. [vul.] To take care of, cherish, foster. provide for, பராமரிக்க. 4. To inquire about one, to ask after his welfare, உசாவ. (c.) தேடிப்புதைத்துத்தெருவிலிரக்கிறதா. Does he hide what he gets and beg in the street? தேடிமுடியாது. No search can discover it. It cannot be got by seeking. தேடினபூண்டுகாலிலேமிதிபட்டது. The plant sought is under foot; i. e. the thing desired at hand. தேடாக்கூறு, s. [prov.] A state of neglect, பராமரிப்பின்மை; also தேட்டாக்கூறு. தேடாக்கூறாய்க்கிடக்க, inf. To be neglected. தேடாத்தேட்டம், s. Acquisition by unparalleled labor, acquisition by unworthy or unjust means. தேடிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To get for another. 2. To support dependants by labor, &c. தேடித்திரிய, inf. To go in search of, to seek for. தேடித்தின்ன, inf. To live by unworthy means. 2. To live by whoredom. தேடிப்பார்க்க, inf. To search for. 2. To use means for obtaining. (c.) தேடிப்பிடிக்க, inf. To seek and find out. 2. To get a paramour, as an unchaste woman. தேடியதேட்டம், s. [in law.] Property acquired, as distinguished from dowry, legacies, or that which is hereditary. தேடியாடித்திரிய--தேடியோடித்திரிய, inf. To take great pains to search. தேடிவைக்க, inf. nāṟu (p. 275) கிறது, நாறினது, நாறும், நாற, v. n. To yield a smell, usally bad, மணக்க. 2. To stink, துர்க்கந்தம்வீச. (c.) 3. To be fragrant, நற்கந்தம்வீச. 4. To arise, come into being, begin to exist, தோன்ற. 5. The spring forth, to shoot up, முளைக்க. (சது.) நாறுகரந்தை, s. Sweet basil. See கரந் தை. நாறல், v. noun. Stinking; being offensive in smell, corrupt, or putrid. 2. A stinking thing, a stench, நாற்றமுடையது. நாறற்சரீரம், s. The vile body. நாறற்சோறு, s. Stale and spoiled rice. நாறற்சோற்றுக்குப்பதம்பார்ப்பானேன். Why taste spolied rice; i. e. why take pains to improve what is past recovery? நாறற்பாக்கு, s. Areca-nut soaked to improve the taste till the husk begins to purify. நாறல்மீன், s. Spoiled fish, stinking fish. நாறல்வாயன், s. A person with stinking breath. 2. (fig.) One who uses obscene language. நாறல்வாயன்தேடக் கர்ப்பூரவாயன் கைக்கொண் டான். What the stinking mouthed (the miser) has sought, the camphor mouthed (the benevolent) has obtained. 45)

vyiṟu (p. 376) s. [gen. வயிற்றின், improp. வயறு.] Belly, paunch, stomach, உதரம். (c.) 2. The womb, கருப்பப்பை, (Ell. 171.) எனக்குவயிற்றாலேபோகிறது. I have looseness of the bowels. வயிறழுகிறது. Wambling of the bowels. வயிறுகொதிக்கிறது. The bowels yearn, (lit.) the belly boils. வயிறுபகீரெனல். Trembling of the belly from sudden fear. வயிறுகனத்துக்கொள்ள, inf. [v. noun. வயிற்றுக்கனப்பு.] To feel heavy in the stomach, &c. See கன, v. வயிறுகாய--வயிறுகாந்த, inf. To hunger. வயிறுகுளிர, inf. To be satisfied, refreshed by food; also used adverbially. வயிறுசம்பூரணமாகுதல், v. noun. Filling the stomach with food. வயிறுதாரி--வயிற்றுமாரி, s. A glutton; a devourer. வயிறுபொருமுதல்-வயிறூதுதல், v. noun. Puffing up of the belly, by indigestion. 2. Swelling of the belly from eating. வயிறெரிய, inf. I can't look upon this distressing scene. வயிற்றிற்கிருமி, s. Belly-worms. வயிற்றுக்கடுப்பு, s. Pains in dysentery, &c. 2. Dysentery. வயிற்றுக்கட்டி, s. An abscess in the bowels. வயிற்றுக்கனப்பு, s. Constipation, &c. See கன, v. வயிற்றுக்குத்து, s. Piercing pain in the belly. வயிற்றுக்கொதி, s. Hunger, &c. See கொதி. வயிற்றுப்பறப்பு, s. [prov. வயிற்றுப்ப றதி.] Voraciousness. 2. Livelihood sought with great labor, (lit.) flying of the stomach. வயிற்றுப்பாடு--வயிற்றுப்பிழைப்பு, v. noun. Livelihood. வயிற்றுப்புகைச்சல், v. noun. [lit. smoking in the belly.] Excessive heat in the stomach from the duodenum, on account of long standing impurities. வயிற்றுப்பிஷம்--வயிற்றுப்பொருமல், s.
