Putting the string between the leaves of a book and noticing the passage on which it lies, to ascertain one's luck, determine one's choice, &c. ஏட்டுச்சுரைக்காய்கறிக்காமா. Will pumpkin (as written) in the book serve for curry? i. e. the bare rehearsal of a privilege does not amount to its enjoyment. ஏடுகோக்க, inf. To string the leaves of an ola book. ஏடுசேர்க்க, inf. To make an ola book. ஏடுபடர்ந்தபால்--ஏடுபடிந்தபால், s. Milk in which cream is formed. ஏடுவார, inf. To pare olas. ஏடெழுத, inf. To write the alphabet for a child, for which a lucky day is chosen, ceremonies attended, a feast provided for relatives, &c. 2. To begin a book for a learner. ஏட்டின்படிப்பு--ஏட்டின்கல்வி, s. Learning by rote, learning which requires frequent reference to books, learning without understanding what is learnt. கள்ளேடுபோட, inf. To stay away from school upon any slight pretext. கள்ளேடுவிட, inf. To slip or miss a leaf by design in reading or copying, &c. 2. To perform duties deceitfully or perfunctorily. வெள்ளேடு, s. To adopt--as a child, a sentiment; to embrace, espouse, receive, அங்கீகரிக்க. 4. To receive alms, gifts, &c.-as a beggar, to receive in hand, பிச்சையேற்க. 5. To oppose in battle, meet the foe, எதிர்க்க. 9. v. n. To be suitable for, agreeable to, adapted to, appropriate, becoming, இசைவாயிருக்க. ஏற்பதிகழ்ச்சி. Begging is disgraceful. கட்டளைப்படிநடந்தால்நீயவருக்கேற்பாய். If you act according to orders you will be acceptable to him. அதுதெய்வத்திற்கேலாது. [commonly ஏராது or ஏற்கமாட்டாது.] That will not be acceptable or proper in the sight of God. இதுதிருவுளத்திற்கேற்குமா. Will this be agreeable to the divine mind? is it just? meaning it is not. இந்தப்பிரமகத்திபாதகத்தையுமேற்றுக்கொள்வாய்... And the crime of this brahmanicide you become chargeable with. எதிரேற்றதெவ்வர். As is fit. mete, becoming, appropriate, proper, suitable, equitable. 3. As one likes, according to one's own pleasure. ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள, inf. To receive, admit, allow, agree, to accept. 2. To undertake, engage in. 3. To take charge of, become responsible for. ஏற்க--ஏற்கவே, adv. Properly, suitably, தக. 2. [prov.] Before, முன் (also ஏற்கன, improperly). ஏற்கநடக்க, inf. To behave properly or with moral rectitude. 2. To act so as to please. ஏற்கை--ஏற்பு, v. noun. Agreement, approbation, பொருத்தம். 2. Acceptation, reception, acceptance, அங்கீகாரம். 3. Receiving alms, &c., பிச்சையேற்கை. ஏற்புழிக்கோடல், v. noun. Applying grammatical rules, definitions, &c. where they may properly apply, allowing of exceptions, exercising discretion, &c.--one of the உத்தி. ஏற்புறவணிய, inf. To seek occasion, opportunity, &c., வகைபார்க்க. ஏதுவாக, inf. To be adapted to; subject or liable to. ஏதுவாக்க, inf. To adapt, suit; to subject, make liable to. ஏதுவானவன், s. A man of property, means, pecuniary ability. ஏதுவிலக்கு, s. A figure in rhetoric --as காரணவிலக்கு. ஏதுவின்முடித்தல், v. noun. Giving the reasons or causes of things asserted by an author as a clue to the subject without extended description. See உத்தி. ஏதுவுருவகம், s. A figure in rhetoric, a kind of metaphor in which the point of resemblance is indicated, உருவகத் திலொன்று--as இவள்மாற்றத்தாற்கிள்ளை, in talk she is a parrot. ஏதுப்போலி--ஏதுவாபாசம், s.
