toẕil (p. 262) s. Act, action, deed, செயல். 2. Work, service, employment, avocation, art, pursuit, practice, வேலை. 3. Office, trade, function, business, உத்தியோகம். 4. Skill, competence, address in performance, adroitness, exercise of acumen, display of ingenuity in workmanship, machinery, or speech, சாமர்த்தியம். 5. [in gram.] A verb, வினைச்சொல். 6. Result, natural effect, characteristic, instinct, தன்மை. 7. Appropriate duties or occupations, குலாசாரம். 8. Treachery, intrigue, cunning, தந்திரம்-Note For முத்தொழில், the three operations of the deity and ஐந்தொழில், as given in Saiva Agamas, see பஞ்சகிருத்தியம் under கிருத்தியம். The six தொழில், or actions, appropriate to the holy land, or India proper, are: 1. உழவு. ploughing, tillage. 2. தொழில், workmanship, manufacture. 3. வரைவு, marriage, with appropriate ceremonies. 4. வா ணிகம், traffic. 5. வீச்சை, வித்தை. arts, science, literature. 6. சிற்பம். architecture. The six தொழில் or duties and occupations appropriate to the four castes are: 1. To அந்தணர், brahmans: 1. ஓதல், study and recitation of the Vedas. 2. ஓதுவித்தல், teaching the Veda. 3. வேட்டல், performing daily and special rites tending the sacred fire. &c. 4. வேட்பித்தல், managing the performance of rites for others, &c. 5. ஈதல், distributing alms, supporting religious mendicants. 6. ஏற்றல், receiving alms, and donations from worthy persons. II. To அரசர், the royal or military race: 1. ஓதல், studying. 2. வேட்டல், performing rites. 3. ஈதல், bestowing alms, and donations. 4. உலகோம்பல், cherishing, protecting, governing the land. 5. படைப்பயிற்றல், training or disciplining armies. 6. பொருதல், carrying on war. III. To வைசியர், or cultivators, marchants and herdsmen: 1. ஓதல், study, 2. வேட்டல், performing rites. 3. பொருளீட் டல், acquiring wealth. 4. ஈதல், bestowing alms. 5. பசுக்காத்தல், keeping cows. 6. ஏரு ழல், agriculture. IV. சூத்திரர், servile castes: 1. முதன்மூவர்க்கேவல்செய்தல், serving the first three castes. 2. பொருளீட்டல், acquiring wealth. 3. உழுதல், tillage. 4. பசுக்காத்தல், keeping cows. 5. குயிலூவத்தொழில்செய்தல், playind on stringed and wind instruments 6. காருகவினைகளாக்கல், weaving cotton and silk, bearing burdens, and other drudgery. Authorities differ on some of the varieties. நீஎன்னிடத்தில்தொழில்பண்ணிக்கொண்டுவருகி றாய்ஒருநாளைக்குஅகப்படுவாய். You are dealing slily with me, one day you will be caught. தொழிலாளன், s. [pl. தொழிலாளர்.] A mechanic, artificer, office holder, &c. தொழிலாளி, s. (mas. and fem. vul. தொள்ளாளி, plu. தொழிலாளிகள்.] An artificer, as தொழிலாளன். தொழிலில் இலாபம், s. Profit from work or trade. தொழிலெடுக்க, inf. To get or obtain office. 2. [prov.] To dismiss one from office. 3. See எடு, v. தொழில்மாற, inf. To be transferred from one profession to another. 2. To be put out of office. தொழிலோர், s. [plu.] Artificers, &c. தொழிற்குறைவிசேடம், s. [in rheto.] One of the four kinds of விசேடம், enhancing the superiority of a person or thing by a description of results without noticing intermediate causes, ஓரலங்காரம். தொழிற்பட, inf. To be formed, constructed, produced, evolved, காரியப்பட. 2. To engage in an office, to enter upon a work, வேலையிற்புக. தொழிற்பண்பு, s. toṭai (p. 262) s. The thigh, in which sense, for butcher's meat, are, பெருந்தொடை, the upper part of the thigh; பின்னந்தொடை, a hind-quarter; முன்னந்தொடை, a fore-quarter of a sheep, &c. 2. Flower-garland. பூமாலை. 3. Bow-string, நாண். 4. Arrow, அம்பு. 5. Surrounding wall, bulwark, fortification, மதிற்சுற்று. 6. Block projecting from a wall to support a beam, சுவர்ப்புறத்து நீண்டவுத்திரம். 7. A bunch of flowers, பூங் கொத்து. 8. Verse, poetry, பாட்டு. 9. A series, train, connexion, succession, tissue, composition, commonly poetic, தொடர்ச்சி. 1. Rhyme in poetry, செய்யுளுறுப்பினொன் று, [ex தொடு. (v.)--There are five classes of rhyme, each containing eight verieties, and three single ones making fortythree in all. The five classes are: 1. மோ னை, மோனைத்தொடை, the rhyming of the initial letter of the line or foot through the stanza. The varieties of this class are: 1. அடிமோனை, முதன்மோனை, rhyming of the initial in the foot of each line. 2. இணைமோனை, of the first two feet in each line. 3. பொழிப்புமோனை, of every other foot. 4. ஓரூஉமோனை, of the first and fourth foot. 5. கூழைமோனை, of all the feet in the line but the last. 6. மேற்கதுவாய்மோனை, in every foot bu the second. 7. கீழ்க்கதுவாய்மோனை, of all the feet but the penultimate. 8. முற்றுமோ னை, in every foot. II. இயைபு, இயைபுத்தொ டை, the rhyming of the last feet or letters in the lines. The varieties are: 1. அடிஇயைபு, முதலியைபு, rhyming of the last letter of the first foot in each line. 2. இணையியைபு, of the last letter of the first two feet. 3. பொழிப்பியைபு, of the last letter of every other foot. 4. ஓரூஉவியைபு, of the last letter in the first and fourth. 5. கூழை யியைபு, of the last letter in each foot except the last. 6. மேற்கதுவாயியைபு, in the last letter of every foot but the second. 7. கிழ்க்கதுவாயியைபு, of the last letter in every foot but the penultimate. 8. முற்றிழைபு, of the last letter in all the feet. III. எதுகை, எதுகைத்தொடை, rhyming of the second letter of every line in the stanza, comprising, 1. அடியெதுகை, முதலெதுகை, rhyming of the second letter of the first foot in each line. 2. இணையெதுகை, in the second letter of the two feet. 3. பொழிப்பெதுகை. that of every other foot. 4. ஓரூஉவேதுகை, that of the first fourth. 5. கூழையெது கை, that of all but the last. 6. மேற்கதுவா யெதுகை, that of all but the second. 7. கீழ்க்கதுவாயெதுகை, that of all but the penultimate. 8. முற்றெதுகை, in the second letter of all the feet. IV. முரண், முரண்டொ டை, a kind of poetry consisting of words taken in contrast, or by antithesis, as இருள்பரந்தன்னமாநீர்மருங்கின், நிலவுகுவிந்தன்னவெண் மணலொருசிறை, by the side of the waters, dark as the wide spread nocturnal gloom, the white sand appeared, as if the moonlight had formed itself into heaps. Of this there are eight varieties, as 1. அடிமுரண்,முதன் முரண், contrast in the first foot of the lines, with one another. 2. இணைமுரண், that in the first two feet of the lines. 3. பொ ழிப்புமுரண், that in every other foot of the lines. 4. ஓரூஉமுரண், that in the first and fourth. 5. கூழைமுரண், contrast in all but the last. 6. மேற்கதுவாய்முரண், in all but the second. 7. கீழ்க்கதுவாய்முரண், in all but the penultimate. 8. முற்றுமுரண், in all the feet. V. அளபெடைத்தொடை, rhyme formed by அளபெடை, or lengthening a letter for a verse, which are of eight varieties, as 1. அடி யளபெடை, முதலளபெடை, forming rhyme by அளபெடை, in the first of each line. 2. இணையளபெடை, in the first two feet. 3. பொ ழிப்பளபெடை in every other foot. 4. ஓரூஉவள பெடை, in the first and fourth. 5. கூழையள பெடை, in all but the last. 6. மேற்கதுவாயள பெடை, in all but the second. 7. கீழ்க்கது வாயளபெடை, in all but the penultimate. 8. முற்றளபெடை, in all the feet. VI. அந்தாதி, அந்தாதித்தொடை, rhyme by the occurrence of the last syllable, word or words in the stanza as the first of the sacceeding. VII. இரட்டைத்தொடை, by the repetition of the same in every foot through the line. VIII. செந்தொடை, poetry of numbers without rhyme, a kind of blank verse. For further particulars, see these in their respective places. தொடைமுறியஅடிக்க, inf. To break one's thigh in beating him. தொடைமேல்தொடைபோட, inf. To sit with one thigh on the other (deemed impolite.) தொடைதட்டிவெள்ளாழர், s. [in burlesque.] Barbers. தொடையகராதி, s. A division of சது ரகராதி, which see. தொடையிலேதட்ட, inf. To strike the thigh in token of bravery, defiance, admiration, surprize, &c. தொடையைநிமிண்ட, inf. To pinch the thigh as a punishment of a school boy, &c. தொடைவாழை, s. A tumor on the thigh near the groin. 2. [prov.] A shrub whose leaves are used to cure the tumor. தொடைவாழைப்புறப்பட்டுக்கிடக்கிறான். He lies sick of the thigh-tumor. தொடைவிகற்பம், s. The different species or varieties of rhyme. 46)

toṭu (p. 262) கிறேன், தொட்டேன், வேன், தொட, v. a. To touch, to come in contact with, to feel, to perceive by thr touch, பரிசிக்க. 2. To handle, to take hold of, to finger, to use, பிடிக்க. 3. To be connected or united, to be joined, &c., பொருத்த. 4. To begin, தொடங்க. (c.) 5. To discharge an arrow or other missile weapon. அம்பெய்ய. 6. To eat, உண்ண. 7. To dig, to scoop out, to excavate, தோண்ட. 8. To put on shoes or a garment, தரிக்க. தொட்டாற்றோழன்விட்டால்மாற்றான். A friend if persevered, in and a if neglected; spoken of an art. தொடப்படாது. I cannot give you; (lit.) Cannot touch. தொட்டுக்கண்ணிலேயொற்றிக்கொள்ள......To touch the feet of an idol or great person and then apply the fingers, to the eyes; as if saying, 'I worship your feet.' 2. [in contempet.] To be too obsequious, or aubmissive. ஆகாசத்தைத் தொட்டுக்கொண்டுநிற்கிறது. The top if trees, &c., touches the sky. தோஷந்தொட்டுநிற்கிறது. Fatal symptoms have appeared (as in cholera, &c., before death). நிலந்தொட்டுவைத்தார்கள். They rubbed the sand in which they had written (on their forehead, eyes, and breast) --Note. This is done in homage to Ganesa or Sarasvati. சனியன் தொட்டுக்கொண்டது. Seturn has begun to exert his malign influence. செருப்புத்தொட்டுக்கொண்டுநடக்க, inf. To walk with sandals. தொடுகழல், s. A pair of Indian slippers, as தொடுசெருப்பு. (p.) தொடுகழன்மறவர், s. (plu.) Heroes who wear ankle rings. 2. Huntsmen with sandals. (p.) தொடுகை, s. Touch, பரிசம். 2. v. noun. Digging, தோண்டுகை. தொடுகிலும், [prov.] An all, in any wise, &c., used with a negative verb, ஒருபொழுதும். தொடுசெருப்பு, s. As தொடுகழல். (c.) தொடுபதம், s. Boiled rice, சோறு. (சது.) தொடுவாய், s. [prov.] Confluence or junction of two rivers, or of a river with the sea, தண்ணீர்கள்சந்திக்குமிடம். தொடுவாள், s. [prov.] The horizon, அடிவானம்; [ex வான், the heavens.] தொடல், s. noun. Being close, சார் தல். 2. Touching, தீண்டல். 3. Digging, தோண்டல். 4. Catching, பிடித்தல். 5. Eating, புசித்தல். தொட்டடி, s. [properly தொட்டஅடி.] The beginning line--oppos. to விட்டடி. தொட்டப்பன், s. [prov.] A godfather. தொட்டாய்ச்சி, s. A godmother. (Chris. usage.) தொட்டல், v. noun. Digging, தோண் டல். தொட்டு, [verbal participle.] Touching. concerning, in reference to. (See சட்டி.) 2.
