An ox or cow suffered to run wild, or not folded by night. கட்டாணி, s. a fastening for a female ear-ring, கடைப்பூட்டாணி. கட்டிக்காக்க, inf. To preserve, guard, to protect. கட்டிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To give a daughter in marriage. 2. To make, build, construct, &c., and give one. கட்டிக்கொள்ள, inf. To take in marriage. 2. To hug, to embrace. 3. To contract, to lay up, to accumulate as moral deeds, virtue or vice, for future retribution. 4. To make up a difference, a quarrel, &c., to become reconciled, to settle amicably, to compromise. தேசத்தைக்கட்டிக்கொள்ள. To conquer a country. புண்ணியத்தைக்கட்டிக்கொள்ள. To do a good action. பாவத்தைக்கட்டிக்கொள்ள. To contract guilt, to commit a sin. மாங்காய்ப்புளிதொண்டையைக்கட்டிக்கொண்ட து. The acid of the mango has caused a constriction in my throat. என்னபலனைக்கட்டிக்கொண்டாய். What hast thou obtained? கட்டிப்பிடிக்க, inf. To throw the arms round a person, to hug, to embrace, to grasp, to seize. கட்டிப்புகுந்தவள், s. A widow that has married again. கட்டியடிக்க, inf. To tie and flog, whip, &c., கட்டுகரை, s. A mole, a pier to defend shipping in a harbor. கட்டுசரக்கு, s. Mercury, &c., consolidated. கட்டுத்தாலிகட்ட, inf. To marry a widow. 2. To take a woman to wife-this may be done, if the man has no child by his first wife, with her consent, who acknowledges its validity by tying the marriage symbol round the neck of the new bride. தன்னைக்கட்ட, inf. The anger of those who have attained to the summit of virtue, though it is ever so transient, is hardly endurable-(குறள்.) கணநாதர்--கணநாயகர், s. The attendants of Siva, கணாதிபர். கணபதி, s. Ganesa, விநாயகன். கணப்பொருத்தம், s. One of the அட்டகணம். 2. One of the விவாகப்பொருத் தம். கணப்பொழுது, s. A moment, ச ணப்பொழுது கணமூலம், s. The root of longpepper. கணமூலி, s. The சாணாக்கி herb, Ocimum, L. கணாதிபன், s. Ganesa, விக்கினேசு ரன். 2. Siva, சிவன். கணேசன், s. Ganesa, son of Siva and Parvati--god of wisdom and remover of obstacles--whence he is invoked in all new undertakings. He is represented as a short man with an elephant's head and large belly, வினாயகன். Wils. p. 278. GAN'ESHA. விவாககணம்--வதுவைக்கணம், s. The correspondence between the constellations under which the bride and bridegroom were born. It is of three kinds, viz.: 1. தேவகணம், when both the bride and bridegroom are born under the following seven constellations, அச்சு வினி, அத்தம், அனுடம், இரேவதி, சோதி, புநர்பூசம் and மிருகசீரிடம். The union of such is regarded auspicious. 2. மனிதகணம், when they are born under the following eleven constellations, உத்திரம், உரோகணி, உத்திரட்டா தி, உத்திராடம், திருவாதிரை, திருவோணம், பரணி, பூசம், பூரட்டாதி, பூரம் and பூராடம். Or even if the former be of the first class, and the latter of the second, or vice versa, it is thought indifferent. 3. இராக்கதகணம், when they are born under the following constellations, அவிட்டம், ஆயிலியம், கார்த்தி கை, கேட்டை, சதயம், சித்திரை, மகம், மூலம், and விசாகம், it is thought indifferent; but should the first be of either of the former class and the second of the last class, or vice versa, it is thought inauspicious. இக்கணம், s. This instant, now. அட்டகணம்--அஷ்டகணம், s. [in poetry.] The eight kinds of ominous feet with which the invocation of the poem may begin, viz.: (1) நிலம் (ground), நிலக் கணம், a foot consisting of three நிரை; (which see)--as கருவிளங்கனி. (2) நீர் (water), நீர்க்கணம், a foot consisting of one நேர் and two நிரை--as கூவிளங்கனி. (3) மதி (moon), சந்திரகணம், a foot consisting of one நிரை, and two நேர்; (which see)--as புளிமாங்காய். (4) இயமானன் (life, soul), இந் திரகணம், a foot consisting of three நேர்-as தேமாங்காய். A poem in which the invocation commences with any of the above four கணம், is believed by Tamulians to bring good luck to the hero of the poem. (5) சூரியன் (sun), சூரியகணம், a foot consisting of one நேர், one நிரை and one நேர்--as கூவிளங்காய்; this foreshows that the hero of the poem will soon become a coward. (6) தீ (fire), தீக் கணம், a foot consisting of one நிரை, one நேர் and one நிரை--as புளிமாங்கனி; this portends a loss of health. (7) வாயு (air), மாருதகணம், a foot consisting of two நேர் and one நிரை--as தேமாங்கனி; this foretells the loss of wealth. (8) ஆகாயம் (sky, expanse), அந்தரகணம், a foot consisting of two நிரை and one நேர்--as கருவிளங்காய்; this portends shortness of life. The last four கணம், are on the whole considered to be inauspicious. See சீர். பதினெண்கணம், s. The eighteen classes of dependent supernals, viz.: 1. அமரர், immortals, the inhabitants of Swerga. 2. சித்தர், a kind of gods. 3. அசுரர், demons. 4. தைத்தியர், another kind of demons. 5. கருடர், another kind of gods. 6. கின்னரர், celestial musicians. 7. நிருதர், a kind of demons. 8. கிம்புரு டர், a kind of celestial musicians who possess a human face and the body of a bird. 9. காந்தருவர், heavenly choristers. 1. இயக்கர், demigods who minister to gods, attendants particularly on குபே ரன். 11. விஞ்சையர், heavenly magicians. 12. பூதர், ghosts, familiar spirits. 13. பிசாசர், devils. 14. அந்தரர், wanderers. 15. முனிவர், sages, hermits, learned men. 16. உரகர், serpents. 17. ஆகாயவாசிகள், those who dwell in the air. 18. போக பூமியர், those who by the practice of virtue in this world have attained a residence in that of the particular principal deity whom they worshipped. They are ever blooming and young; their time of residence, however in this abode of happiness depends upon the merit they had acquired previous to their admission. நாற்கணம், s. The four classes of letters, viz.: 1. உயிர்க்கணம், vowels. 2. வன்கணம், the six hard-sounding letters. 3. மென்கணம், the six soft-sounding letters. 4. இடைக்கணம், the six middlesounding letters. கணம், s. A circle, வட்டம். 2. A ball, rotundity, திரட்சி 3. One of the eight kinds of diseases in children--a kind of hectic fever, ஓர்நோய். 4. A kind of grass, ஓர்புல். (p.) கணக்காய்ச்சல், s. Sapling, a young tree in general, இலமரம். (c.) 3. (p.) A small thing, a trifle, a particle, அற்பம். 4. A bracelet, கைவளை. கன்றுந்தாயும், s. A cow and calf. இளமையிற்பயிராக்கப்படும்விருக்ஷத்தின்கன்றுகள். Plants grown up in their youth. கன்றுகாலி, s. Cattle, old and young, of the bovine species. கன்றுகொல்லி, s. A disease in cows causing the death of their calves, மாடுகளுக்குவரும்ஓர்நோய். கன்றுக்குட்டி, s. [vul.] A calf. கன்றுதாய்ச்சி, s. A cow great with young, குற்பசு. கன்றுபட, inf. To be in calf. கன்றுபோட--கன்றீன, inf. To calve. கன்றூட்ட, inf. [prov. கன்றுக்கூட் ட.] To suck, as calves. கன்றூட்டவிட, inf. A short and crooked horn like a parrot's beak. கிளிக்கொம்பன், s. An ox whose horns are short and turned downwards. கிளிச்சிறை, s. One of the four kinds of gold resembling, in color, the parrot's wing, ஓர்வகைப்்பொன். கிளிமூக்கன், s. One with an aquiline nose. கிளிமூக்குக்கிழங்கு, s. The root of the ஆகாசகருடன் creeper, ஆகாசகருடன்கிழங்கு. கிளிமூக்குமாங்காய், s. A mango with the bottom end a little bent. கிளிமூக்கெழுத்தாணி, s. Minerals which, on being exposed to the action of fire, disappear; said to be the case with fictitious cinnabar, yellow sulphuret of arsenic, &c., Sixtyfour kinds are reckoned. tāli (p. 234) s. The marriage badge tied on the neck of the bride, by the bridegroom, at the time of the wedding; and worn like a wedding ring, and an suspicious ornament, மாங்கல்லியம். (c.) தாலிப்பிச்சைக்கேட்க. The ask the boon of the wedding badge; i. e. for a wife, to plead for the life of her husband. தாலியறுப்பாய். Thou wilt lose thy wedding badge. (a curse.) தாலியைக்கட்டுவாய், Thou wilt fasten on another wedding badge be i. e. thou wilt lose thy wife. [prov.] அவளுடையதாலியிருப்புத்தாலியாயிருக்கவேண்டும். May her wedding badge be iron; i. e. enduring, may her husband live long. தாலிகட்டு, v. noun. Investing the bride with the wedding badge, on day of marriage. தாலிகட்டுமூர்த்தம். The auspicious hour for putting on the marriage badge. தாலிக்கயிறு, s. A twisted thread for the தாலி. தாலிக்குபொன்னுருக்க, inf. To melt gold for the wedding badge on an auspicious day. தாலிக்கோவை, s. A string of beads to which the marriage badge is attached. தாலிச்சரடு, s. [[prov.] தாலிக்கொடி.] A braided gold wire for the marriage badge. (c.) தாலிபெருக்கிக்கட்டுதல், v. noun. Appending beads with the marriage badge, accompanied with certain ceremonies-regarded as auspicious. தாலிப்பொருத்தம், s. [in astrol.] Such an agreement in the configuration of the heavenly bodies, in the horoscope of the two persons to be united, as is deemed propitious for the marriage; and the investiture of the bride with the தாலி. --Note. If the தாலிபொருத்தம் be unpropitious, the parties do not come together; the wedding is deferred. It is one of the தசப்பொருத்தம். தாலியறுக்க, inf. To tear off the wedding token at the husband's death. தாலியறுத்தவள், appel. n. A widow. one who has torn off the marriage badge. தாலியுரு, s. [com. பச்சைப்பாம் பு.] A kind of green snake. பச்சிலைமருந்து, s. Leaves used medicinally. பச்சிலையோணான், s. [prov. for பச்சோ ணான், which see.] The chameleon. பச்சிறைச்சி, s. Raw meat, flesh, &c. 2. A raw sore, பச்சைப்புண். பச்சுடம்பு, s. The tender body of an infant, or of a woman after child-birth. 2. One still sore from small pox, &c. பச்செனல், v. noun. Being green, verdant, tender, or beautiful. பச்சென்றஉடம்பு. A tender and beautiful body--said of the female sex. பச்செனவு, v. noun. Greenness, verdure. பச்சை. 2. Moistness, dampness, sap, juice, ஈரம். 3. Plumpness, fulness, பொலிவு. பச்செனவானமரம். A verdant tree. உடம்பிலேசற்றும்பச்செனவில்லை. There is no flesh, no plumpness on him. பச்சோணான்--பச்சோந்தி, s.
