ōtu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஓதினேன், வேன், ஓத, v. a. To recite the vedas with appropriate intonations, aspirations, &c.--being one of the six duties of the brahman; to chant a sacred eulogy in the temple, வேத மோத. 2. To read, learn, recite audibly in order to commit to memory, படிக்க. 3. To speak, say, declare, சொல்ல. 4. To repeat prayers--as the Romanists and Mohomedans, செபமுச்சரிக்க. 5. To give advice, persuade clandestinely, to teach one to act with duplicity, புத்திசொல்ல. 6. To utter incantations, to consecrate, மந்திரமுரைக்க. ஓதாதார்க்கில்லையுணர்வுடனொழுக்கம். Knowledge and good manners are not to be found in unlearned men. ஓதாமலொருநாளுமிருக்கவேண்டாம். Employ your whole time in the pursuit of knowledge. ஓதுவதொழியேல். Cease not to learn. (ஔ வை.) எண்ணெயோதிக்கொடுக்கிறது. To administer holy oil to women in labor. காதிலேயோதிவிட்டான். He has given him secret advice, he has prevailed on him by underhand or secret means. நூறுநாளோதியாறுநாள்விடத்தீரும். The traces of learning made in a hundred days will be effaced by indolence in six. ஓதியிறைக்க, inf. To sprinkle holy water. ஓதியுடைக்க, inf. To break a cocoanut with appropriate incantations. ஓதிவிட, inf. To cease reading. ஓதினநீர், s. Holy water, consecrated water. ஓதுவான், s. A teacher of the vedas, and other sacred literature, ஆசா ன். 2. A learner, a scholar, a student, படிப்பவன். 3. The eulogist of the god of the temple whose duty it is to chant the verses directed by the attending priest, திருப்பாட்டுப்பாடுவோன். ஓதுவானெல்லாமுழுவான்றலைக்கடையில். The scholar must wait at the backdoor of the ploughman; i. e. learning is dependent on the plough. ஓதுவிக்க, inf. To teach the vedas, வேதங்கற்பிக்க. 2. To teach science, instruct, படிப்பிக்க. ஓதல், v. noun. Reciting the vedas, &c. 2. Reading. 3. Learning, speaking. ஓதலினன்றேவேதியர்க்கொழுக்கம். Good manners in a brahman are preferable to the recitation of the vedas. ஓதற்றொழிலுரித்துயர்ந்தோர்மூவர்க்கும்.
